The
Ranch Watch program is a valuable aid to rural communities and
the effort to control crime. Awareness and involvement are the
key elements, and the continual exchange of information between
the Sheriff's department and area ranchers is vital.
Deputies'
Responsibilities:
The deputies will meet with ranchers and set up the program,
continue to meet with them at least once a month, help them apply
identification stickers to property, disseminate information from
the Sheriff's department, and educate ranchers in the following
areas:
- Identify
suspicious behavior
- What
to look for
- How
to report a crime
- Explain
what the rancher can do
- Explain
the rights of the rancher to protect his property
Rancher's
Responsibilities:
- Acquaints
self with neighbors' schedules and recognizes neighbors' vehicles
and regular visitors to the area
- Maintains
a list of names, addresses, and telephone numbers of neighbors
and the Sheriff's department
- Has
visible address numbers posted
- Participates
in Ranch Watch program and keeps a written record of serial
numbers of property
- Informs
at least one neighbor or Sheriff's department where to be
contacted in emergencies
- Calls
the Sheriff's department immediately when suspicious activity
is observed, identifies self, and stays on the line to provide
requested information, then shares it with another rancher
who in turn will notify another rancher so residents can be
advised through the communications network
- Encourages
other ranchers to become involved in Ranch Watch
- Informs
deputy of new residents
Records:
Deputies will make available to ranches OAN (owner applied
numbers) to be attached to equipment to assist in identification.
Rancher will maintain an accurate record of inventory at his or
her ranch to be referenced to in case of theft or destruction
of property. The OAN should contain the following:
- WY
- Wyoming
- 23
- Sublette County designation
- JNC
- First, middle and last initials or any combination
- 0000
- Last four digits in rancher's social security number
The
example of the above OAN would be: WY23JNC0000 and this would
be applied to rancher's property with an engraver supplied by
the Sheriff's department.
