Leave your itinerary and contact numbers with your family or friends at home. Your identification, passport, airline tickets, vouchers, funds and personal property such as cameras, jewelry, etc. are sought after commodities. Whenever possible it is best to leave your valuables in a hotel safe or other secure location when you aren't using them. Stay alert and trust your instincts. Whenever possible, plan your outings and visits to area attractions in pairs or groups. Plan a route before you set out for the day. If you must ask for directions go into a shop or hotel lobby. Park close to the front door whenever possible. NEVER PICK UP STRANGERS! Don't allow strangers to distract you and be leery of those who appear to be overly friendly. Be observant of your surroundings. Always try to park in busy, well-lit areas and be aware of people loitering near your room for no apparent reason. Don't hesitate to report all suspicious activity to a police officer, security officer or hotel staff member. Always lock your car, even when you are driving. Valuables should be kept out of sight at all times. If you stop overnight take your luggage, packages and other valuables inside with you. Keep your room windows and doors closed and locked at all times. If someone knocks, know who they are before you open the door. The front desk can tell you if the person is with the hotel staff. Locate fire exits, elevators, and the nearest phone in your hotel/motel. Have an exit plan ready in case of a fire or other emergency. Make sure all the children in your group know the name, address and phone number of their hotel. Remind them of how to get help if they become lost or separated from their group. Teach them how to use 9-1-1! Remember... you do not need coins to call 9-1-1 from a public pay phone. If you are traveling with small children remember that law requires children be secured in a car safety seat. For more information call the Sheriff's Office at 367-4378 or 276-5448. |
