The Sublette County Sheriff's Citizen Academy will provide community members with an inside look at the Sheriff's Office and all facets of law enforcement. During the six week academy, students will be introduced to Sheriff Office operations, as well as participate in demonstrations of firearm safety and felony stops and personal safety issues. Other topics include law enforcement ethics, patrol procedures, criminal law, investigations, drug enforcement and eradication, crime prevention, detentions, and communications. As part of the curriculum, students will be scheduled to ride along with a patrol deputy to see the Sheriff's units at work.

Purpose
The six week academy is designed to give citizens an overview of the department's policies and procedures. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to the traditional law enforcement academy, but the weekly sessions are not designed to make the participant a law enforcement officer.

Instructors
Academy classes are taught by Sheriff's executives and veteran officers. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with the Sheriff and staff members. They are encouraged to ask questions and express their concerns.

Schedule
The length of the Academy is six weeks. Classes meet Wednesday or Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Sublette County Sheriff's Office, Pinedale and Marbleton, respectively. The Academy will culminate the seventh week with a graduation ceremony. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Participant Requirements
Potential candidates for the Academy must meet the following criteria:
1. Minimum age of 21
2. Live or work in Sublette County
3. No prior felony convictions
4. No misdemeanor arrests within one year of application
Any of the above requirements may be waived upon review an approval of the Sheriff.

Selection Procedure
Academy participants are selected by the Sheriff through an application process. Enrollment is limited to approximately twenty students per Academy.
