School district down, not out

by Derek Farr

In its sixth appearance before the School Facilities Commission (SFC), Sublette County School District No. 1 (SCSD#1) again came away without the commission’s approval for a new elementary school.

“It does appear we have one or more commission members blocking us,” SCSD#1 Supt. Doris Woodbury said. “I think the process is improving over time but it is quite frustrating for us in particular.”

She said each time they go before the SFC, “it seems like they think of something else.”

But there was a glimmer of light. The commission lifted the ban on the school district’s preferred construction method, and on Monday SFC Director Ken Daraie encouraged Woodbury to move full steam ahead on the project and “do whatever we could to make up for lost time,” Woodbury said.

The next SFC meeting may just be the finale.

It is scheduled for Nov. 18 in Pinedale and Woodbury said it is important for Pinedale citizens to attend the meeting.

She hopes the district’s seventh appearance will be a charm.

“If we had a list or knowledge of all the things they wanted to know, we’d be prepared for that,” she said. “But it seems that each time we go, then there’s one or two commissioners that are thinking of something else, almost like we are being delayed.”

To the best of their ability, Woodbury said district representatives would like to furnish the SFC with any information they need about the district or the elementary school project.

“We just need to know what they want, and we’re happy to do it.”
