PILT

U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin worked to successfully amend a government spending bill to ensure that local and county governments are treated fairly when it comes to funding for Payments in Lieu of Taxes, according to a release from Cubin's office.

"This money is crucial for county governments to maintain their roads and provide firefighting and law enforcement services," said Cubin. "The federal government has a responsibility to help support local governments when county land is removed from the local tax base. When Congress shortchanges the PILT program, rural counties are the ones who end up paying the piper."

Her amendment to the legislation funding the Department of the Interior for the next fiscal year adds an additional $12 million in PILT funding to the bill by redirecting funds from Interior Department overhead.
