Boynton new county attorney

by Casey Dean

After interviewing four candidates for the Sublette CountyAttorney position at the Sublette County Republican Central Committee meeting Monday, Aug. 16, the committee submitted to the Sublette County Commissioners three names for interim appointment as Sublette County Attorney. Tuesday, Aug.16, the board of commissioners convened in executive session to interview RalphW. Boynton, Stan Decker Cannon and Ken M. McLaughlin as potential replacements for Van Graham, who recently stepped down to pursue an opportunity as director of undergraduate business studies at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC.

After interviewing the three candidates in executive session, the board voted by secret ballot, the winner being Boynton of Cody.

A graduate of Chote School in Wallingford, Conn., Boynton is an alumnus of Monmouth University in West Longbranch, NJ, and University of Wyoming Law School. Boynton went from Laramie to Casper to serve as public defender in the Natrona County Attorney's Office for four years, before operating a private business for nine years. The attorney then served asassistant district attorney in Casper for four years and ran the public defense office. For two years, he served as the full-time City of Casper Municipal Judge, then went on to become chief deputy in the Campbell County Attorney'soffice. He opened a private practice in Gillette for 15 months, then a second in Cody for the past eight months.

Because he and his wife, Marla, have always enjoyed the Sublette County area, Boynton agreed when Marla informed him that he should apply to replace Graham. He looks forward to residing in the locale of many past vacations.

Sublette County Commissioners informed Boynton that his first day in office will be Sept. 1. Upon being appointed, Boynton immediately consulted with those in the Sublette County Attorney's Office.

"Before talking about policy, protocol or approach ... (we will) coordinate and communicate about perspectives and approaches and any procedures that might be modified if at all in any sort of manner at all,"hesaid.

Boynton will serve as interim county attorney until nextfall's election.
