Cattle killed in Upper Green

by Cat Urbigkit

A grizzly bear, or bears, killed three head of cattle on the Upper Green River grazing allotments last week, including one yearling and two calves, according to Brian DeBolt of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

"We don't know if it's multiple bears or a single bear at this point," DeBolt said in an interview Tuesday morning. With abundant vegetation this season, tracking conditions were too poor to make that determination, he said.

The kills were relatively widespread, within about a seven-mile diameter, but that's not too large an area for the damage to have been done by a single bear, DeBolt pointed out.

Although traps were set for several nights last week in an attempt to catch the offender, the bear or bears did not return. DeBolt said that his agency is now waiting for more depredation activity before more control efforts are initiated.
