Brucellosis origin

With the clamor over the brucellosis issue in livestock and wildlife in Wyoming, one interesting tidbit recently floated to the surface again. "Walker's Mammals of the World" reported: "It is suspected that brucellosis was present in wildlife populations prior to settlement of North America by white people because of its 1962 discovery in barren-ground caribou in Alaska and also in northern Canada in 1968. These northern caribou had not been in contact with domestic livestock and, therefore, were not infected by that means."

ESA hearing

U.S. Sen. Craig Thomas will chair a senate committee field hearing on the Endangered Species Act on Aug. 23 in Casper, starting at 9 a.m. in the Wyoming Oil and Gas Commission building.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Fisheries, Wildlife and Water Subcommittee will focus on the impacts of the act and examine ways to improve it.

Testimony will be taken from federal, state and local officials, as well as representatives from agriculture, the mining industry and wildlife groups.
