Marie Shanley

Marie Shanley, 92, passed away in the medical wing of the Sublette Center on July 10, 2004. Her daughter, Dona Rae Morss, granddaughter Marilyn Jensen, and sister Dortha Nelson were with her.

Marie was born March 3, 1912, in Noble, Mo., the fifth of nine children born to Robert and Ethel Gilliland. At the age of three, she moved to Brown County, Neb., with her parents, three older brothers and an older sister. She attended elementary school in Brown County and graduated from high school in Ainsworth, Neb., in 1931.

Marie was united in marriage to William Francis (Bud) Shanley in the town of Brewster, Neb., in 1932. To this union one daughter, Dona Rae, was born.

For a number of years, the Shanleys lived and worked on ranches near Johnstown, Neb. In 1938 Marie and her family moved to Wyoming. They spent some time near Casper; later they lived in Rock Springs and eventually came to Pinedale.

In 1943 they spent a short time in Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles, Marie worked in a shipyard winding armatures as a part of a war defense program. Again they were drawn back to Sublette County and Wyoming. Marie spent many hours preparing wonderful meals for ranch hands on local ranches and dude ranches. She was a wonderful, excellent cook. When retirement years came, she and her husband chose Pinedale as the place to reside. She then had a permanent home on Madison Street in 1972.

In 1997 Marie moved to the Sublette Center, where she had an apartment. She enjoyed living in the Sublette Center and participated in activities such as crafts, pinochle, bingo and kitchen fun. Some of her other activities were reading, crocheting and spending time with her beloved daughter and grandchildren.

She was fondly known to them as "Gomma." She was a fun-loving person with a great sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, her parents, three older brothers, an older sister and three younger brothers.

Surviviors include her daughter, Dona Rae Morss (Murland) of Pinedale; three grandchildren, Marilyn (Craig) Jensen of Boulder, Tom (Frimket) Morss of Dayton, Mont., and Mart (Donna) Morss of Pinedale; five great grandchildren, Luke Morss, Robin Jensen, Corey Jensen, Micki Morss and Bo Morss; two sisters, Vida Wade of Ainsworth and Dortha Nelson of Pinedale and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday July 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Hudson Funeral Home in Pinedale. Interment will follow in the Pinedale Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in Marie's name to the Sublette Center.
