Paul Eshom saves two other soldiers

Paul Eshom, 21, of Pinedale, is being credited with saving the lives of two of his comrades in the Nov. 15 crash of two U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters in West Mosul, Iraq.

Specialist Eshom of Bravo Company, 9th Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division, is credited in a Los Angeles Times story with saving the lives of Pilot Richard Gregg and Sergeant Robert Shelton, braving both enemy fire and flames to pull the men from the wreckage.

Seventeen soldiers died in the crash. There were only five survivors. Eshom received minor injuries and has returned to his unit at the Mosul air base.

Specialist Eshom is the son of Mike and Sherry Eshom of Nampa, Idaho.

In an e-mail to the Examiner on Friday, Mike Eshom said: "We're very proud of him, and thankful he's alive."
