County Commission Briefs

Schooley, Graham files for election.

Donald Schooley of Pinedale has submitted his application for nomination to appear on election ballots for county coroner. Current Coroner Bill Meyer has stated his intent not to seek re-election.

Van Graham filed his application for the county attorney slot. Current county attorney Dale Aronson said he plans to seek re-election, but as of Tuesday, he had not filed the paperwork with the county clerk's office.

As of Tuesday afternoon, several other candidates had filed their applications for elected office, but all were incumbents: Commissioners Betty Fear and Bill Cramer; Clerk Mary Lankford; Assessor Janet L. Montogmery; Clerk of District Court Marilyn Jensen; Treasurer Roxanna Jensen; and Sheriff Hank Ruland.

The filing period for application for nomination of election of partisan candidates remains open through May 31. For more information, contact the county clerk's office.

Valuation expected at $1 billion.

"I truly feel we're going to break the $1-billion mark," Sublette County Assessor Janet L. Montgomery told county commissioners Tuesday about the county's valuation.

Last year, Sublette County's assessed valuation was $851,302,215, the highest in the county's history and nearly double the figure from two years prior. About 90 percent of the county's valuation comes from minerals, with small percentages from industrial, residential, agricultural and commercial.

Montgomery said not all the mineral companies have finished their reporting, but she does expect the numbers to put the county over the $1-billion mark for the first time. The county commission will finalize the county budget in July and will decide at that time whether to tax up to the full 12 mills.
