Four calves killed by bears

by Cat Urbigkit

Four calves belonging to members of the Upper Green River Cattle Association have been confirmed as being killed by a grizzly bear or bears within the last two weeks, according to Wyoming Game and Fish Department bear management officer Brian DeBolt of Lander.

"The Upper Green is having a few kills ... but we haven't had a good situation to trap yet," DeBolt said.

"There have been four confirmed kills up there now," on the Bridger-Teton National Forest, DeBolt said, noting all were calves belonging to different producers.

"Two of those were bitten, but hadn't been killed," DeBolt said, but because of their injuries had to be euthanized.

At this point, the right situation to attempt to capture the offending animal or animals has not arisen, he said, and the agency has no evidence indicating if it's one bear or several bears that are causing the problems.
